Emma Irwin

Open Project & Communities Specialist
Emma works on the Open Innovation Team at Mozilla driving a D&I strategy for Mozilla's communities. She spent 15 years as a web and application developer, a career changed by the opportunity of working on the Netscape 8 browser which opened her eyes to open source through Firefox. She became increasingly active in FOSS, as a member and technical contributor to projects like Moodle, Drupal and Mozilla. Emma worked as a systems engineer for Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC, at which time she fell in love with Open Education and ultimately led the launch of Open Royal Roads - a portal for OER and code. In 2011 Emma began focusing on empowering others in open source, by teaching, running hackathons, workshops and writing curriculum as a volunteer. This lead to her role at Benetech and SocialCoding4Good, matching volunteers with Open Source projects like Wikimedia, Ushahidi, Sahana, Mifos and Amara. Emma works on the Open Innovation Team at Mozilla and feels fortunate to have found her calling, helping projects and people find each other. Emma lives in Sooke BC, with her three daughters.
